An Interview with Pat White

PNR: Welcome Pat, can you tell us a little about how you started writing; was it something you have always wanted to do?

Pat W.: Absolutely!  I “published” my first book when I was 11 for a school project.  I always made up stories in my head and figured so did everyone else J.  Then as an adult, after 10 years in journalism and public relations, my friend challenged me to read fiction, which I hadn’t in years since I was busy raising two little boys.  I was hooked and decided to spin some stories of my own.

PNR: Readers are very excited about Nocturne’s new DARK ENCHANTMENTS series from Silhouette, the premise is very intriguing. How were you approached to join the project?

Pat W.: Actually, the other three authors (Michele Hauf, Cynthia Cooke and Nina Bruhns) and I have been critique partners for years and figured it would be great fun to write a series together.  We created this amazing world with all kinds of wild stuff going on.

PNR: SAVING DESTINY, book four and final of the series will be released in November 2007. Could you tell us about your contribution to the Dark Enchantments series, where does your story fit into this world?

Pat W.: I helped create the mythology and the concept of the Dark Realm and Mortal Realm for this series.  My story, SAVING DESTINY, is about a powerful Ash Demon named Kadenshar, who is blackmailed into rescuing a scientist, Destiny Rue, who is said to be the crystal goddess of legend.  If he wants his brother to live, he must bring Destiny back to the Cadre (group that studies paranormal activities) that has captured the brother.  However, Destiny is also said to be the one person who can wipe out the Ash Demon race.  What’s a hero to do?  Why seduce and control her, of course.

PNR: Whose concept was the Dark Enchantments world? What is your unique take on this world as it relates to your book and characters?

Pat W.: I’m not sure that any one of us came up with Dark Enchantments as much as it morphed out of many conversations about how we wanted this series to develop.  My unique take focuses on crystal magic, if you will, and the power of love to heal emotional wounds.

PNR: How much freedom were you given in developing your installment of the series? Were you given an outline, names, etc. or just the concept to develop?

Pat W.: Just the concept.  I had totally freedom.  Yay!  That said, I read the other three books so I could layer in some history and continue with some of the other authors’ characters.

PNR: Though each book is a stand alone taking place within a common “world”, did you brainstorm with the other the authors for continuity within the Dark Enchantments world? What has been your experience collaborating with so many talented authors?

Pat W.: We brainstormed about the world in general, but not necessarily about our individual stories.  This was an amazing experience.  I learned how great stories can be developed through the synergy of working together.

PNR: What was the biggest challenge you faced working on the series? The most rewarding aspect? Would you do it again?

Pat W.: The biggest challenge?  I guess for me personally it was writing something completely different.  I’ve written romantic comedies, and intrigues, but not dark, sexy, paranormal books.  Boy was that fun!  Most rewarding?  The buzz from writing this action-adventure-romance. It was tons of fun and I learned a lot about myself as a writer.

PNR: What advice would you give to an author looking at being part of a series like this?

Pat W.: Develop your own, unique world that you’re passionate about, and write an amazing book with a strong theme.

PNR: Will Nocturne be revisiting the Dark Enchantments world in the future?

Pat W.: Not sure yet.  I guess time will tell.

PNR: Could you tell us about your current projects, what can readers expect to see in the coming months? Do you have any additional series in the works? Single titles?

Pat W.: I’m currently working on an eHarlequin paranormal story to give readers a taste of the November book.  The eHarlequin story will be featured during the month of October and is tentatively titled, DEMON’S SEDUCTION.  Upcoming releases include Intrigues SOLDIER SURRENDER in January and SHATTERED SECRETS in April of 2008.  No single titles on the schedule yet, but I’m working on one!

PNR: Thank you Pat, for giving us a peek at this exciting series, where can readers find out more about you and your work?

Pat W.: No, thank you!  Check out my website: and for more on Dark Enchantments go to: where we let our characters do the blogging.
