Hauntingly Romantic
Spotlight on Ghost/Specter Themed Romance

Lynn Kurland

Lynn began her writing career at the tender age of five with a series of illustrated shorts entitled Clinton's Troubles in which the compelling hero found himself in all sorts of, well, trouble. She was living in Hawaii at the time and the scope for her imagination (poisoned fish, tropical cliffs, large spiders) was great and Clinton bore the brunt of it. After returning to the states a short while later, writing gave way to music and a poor sap being felled with arrows, being eaten by fish and falling off cars was put aside for operatic heroes in tights.

But somehow during high school, in between bouts of Verdi and Rossini, she managed to find time to submerge herself in equal parts of Tolkien, Barbara Cartland and Mad Magazine. During college, a chance encounter with a large library stack of romances left her hooked, gave her the courage to put pen to paper herself, and finally satisfied that need for a little bit of fantasy with a whole lot of romance!

Two children, three cats, a remodel or two and thousands of pages later, she still loves what she does, still loves finding ways to write the out-of-the-ordinary in everyday situations, and wonders quite often if the castles she occasionally gets to visit really are haunted . . .

An Interview with Lynn Kurland

PNR: Can you tell readers a little about yourself, when did you begin writing?

Lynn K.: I'm married, with a couple of kids, a couple of cats, and too many books in my TBR pile!  I love a good ghost story, a hot fire, and chocolate in any form.  I sold my first book in 1994 and had been writing for several years before that.

PNR: Your debut novel was a ghost story, "Stardust of Yesterday", released in 1996 and featuring Kendrick de Piaget a medieval ghost with a curse. What inspired you to write a romance in which a main character was a ghost? What obstacles did that present?  Was the paranormal element well received by the readers? Tell us a bit about that storyline.

Lynn K.: My thought at the time was:  Wouldn't it be great to go to England, inherit a castle, and find it haunted by a great-looking ghost?  It was only after I'd written the book that I joined RWA and read in a market news somewhere that while ghost stories were being bought (yippee!), the ghosts needed to be relegated to secondary character status (uh-oh!).  I wasn't going to rewrite, so what else could I do but press on?  I was fortunate to land in the slush pile of Gail Fortune at Berkley who loved the story and was willing to take a chance on something out of the norm.  The orders were triple what were expected and it sold very well, so I can only assume I'm not the only one who was intrigued by the idea!

PNR: STARDUST OF YESTERDAY introduces the de Piaget family. Your second novel, A DANCE THROUGH TIME, introduces Jamie MacLeod, a medieval Highland Laird, time traveler, and a key figure in many of your successive novels with paranormal elements. Tell us about Jamie.

Lynn K.: I loved Jamie from the start because he was willing to take things that were completely out of his experience and meet them head-on without a flinch.  As the books have continued on, it's been a pleasure to watch how he's managed to balance his obvious love of exploring a sturdy time gate with his great love for his family.

PNR: Jamie's brother Patrick MacLeod is the original time traveler, tell us a bit of his story in A GARDEN IN THE RAIN, does it involve ghosts as well?

Lynn K.: Patrick found himself in the future and made the best of it, even going so far as to try to bury his past.  Once Jamie came to the future, Patrick no long could, nor did he want to, deny his roots.  The reason there are a few ghosts in his story is because I just love how the history of places becomes part of the current inhabitants 'lives' whether they live with ghosts or structures or merely photographs of ancestors.

PNR: Your main characters often recur in secondary roles. We see Kendrick again in several medieval tales prior to his murder. He also reappears in modern times in DREAMS OF STARDUST. The title rather hints at the connection. How is Kendrick involved in the story and are there paranormal elements to this tale as well?

Lynn K.: Without giving away too much, I'll just say that Kendrick finds his present and his past woven in quite a bit of the story of DREAMS OF STARDUST.  The title was deliberate, to alert Kendrick's fans to his appearance in the story.

PNR: You clearly enjoy variety, you've written time travel, ghosts, straight historicals and contemporaries. Your time travelers have gone in both directions. Your stories also feature two basic family groups, the de Piagets who range from medieval knights to modern day business tycoons, and the MacLeod's, medieval Highland Scots who invariably end up in the present (so far) and their descendants. The stories are not written chronologically and the families have crossed path's numerous times, the genealogy chart on your website is a lifesaver for readers. How do you keep it all straight?

Lynn K.: By giving advice to anyone considering the same thing:  buy a good genealogy program and use it!  I am certainly not perfect in keeping details straight, though I do my best.  I find that the further I get down the path with all these characters and details clamoring to be kept straight, the more difficult it becomes, but it's wonderful chaos for me!

PNR: Your paranormals also have a comical element to them. Medieval times have a definite element of danger; do you feel these two elements offset each other? Do you feel humor is inherent to stories with paranormal situations?

Lynn K.: One of the reasons I love time-travel is for the potential it offers for a good fish-out-of-water story.  I like to laugh; it seems that no matter how serious a book I start to write, it always ends up with some kind of slap-stick going on.  I've stopped fighting it!

PNR: Ghosts have appeared as secondary characters as well. Aside from Jamie's influence, there are the Boar's Head Inn Trio who first appeared in the novella "Three Wise Ghosts". They seem like very diverse and not particularly compatible characters. What is their connection? Tell us about them, and what compels them to involve themselves in matchmaking.

Lynn K.: They all wound up at the inn for various reasons (Fulbert and Ambrose are related by marriage) and it's my understanding that after 400 years or so of haunting, they needed a change of occupation . . . Besides, a good love story is so rewarding!

PNR: Obviously there is going to be a great deal of sexual tension when one of the main romantic characters is incorporeal. There is an element of suspense that keeps the reader turning the pages. Do you work this element into your non-paranormal romances as well?

Lynn K.: I'm a big fan of old romantic movies where lots was left to the imagination.  I try to create situations where (no matter the status of the characters) that's the kind of love story I get to tell.

PNR:  "Three Wise Ghosts" introduces us to the McKinnon family who are descended through the MacLeod line on the maternal side. This story mates a modern day de Piaget to a MacLeod descendant (Megan and Gideon respectively). Thomas McKinnon, Megan's brother, who plays a major although secondary roll in your latest novel, first gets a story of his own in MY HEART STOOD STILL. This is a ghost story as well. The ghostly trio are determined to continue matchmaking for their MacKinnon kin but this time the prospective heroine is also a ghost. Tell us a bit about the story and the challenges it presented.

Lynn K.: There was no curse for the ghostly heroine to have to break (as there was in STARDUST OF YESTERDAY), so I had to find something that would actually allow the hero and heroine to have a happy ending.  The biggest challenge for me in this book was to make my logic plausible without spending so much time on it that the romance was neglected.

PNR: Thomas, having found his happily every after, decides to have a bit of fun with his unsuspecting sister Victoria in your new novel (under the guise of a magnanimous gesture) in MUCH ADO IN THE MOONLIGHT. The title is reminiscent of Shakespeare. Is there a connection? Does Thomas have any clue as to what is in store for Victoria aside from the fact that his castle is haunted?

Lynn K.: Yes, there is quite a bit of Shakespeare involved, in a variety of ways.  I'm quite certain that Thomas has no doubt that Victoria will run afoul of the grumpy but handsome Connor MacDougal, though I suspect he doesn't really anticipate the complications that arise!

PNR: The hero, Connor MacDougal, was also introduced in Thomas's story. He too is a ghost. What suggests to the matchmaking trio that he would be a good match for Victoria? Do they hit if off from the start? Tell us a bit about their story.

Lynn K.: I can't tell too much without a big spoiler alert, but let's just say that Victoria is very strong-willed and focused.  All the potential matchmakers definitely feel that the only one with the spine to stand up to her is Connor MacDougal.

PNR: A new McKinnon, Jennifer, is introduced in Victoria's story. As she is a participant in Victoria's adventure, she is not in the dark about the existence of ghosts or of time travel, and also acquainted with the Boar's Head Inn trio of matchmaking ghosts. Is there a story for her forthcoming? Have you something new in mind to blindside her with? Will we be seeing more of the "Three Wise Ghosts"?

Lynn K.: I don't think the Boar’s Head Trio will be retiring any time soon!  And as far as Jennifer goes, it would certainly be a shame to have all that paranormal experience go to waste . . . wouldn't it?

PNR: Speaking of single siblings. Jamie's story introduced the Smith family who are not related to the two main families except through marriage. Elizabeth Smith is Jamie's wife and a woman born in the modern era. Her brother Alex is first to fall prey to the time gates on Jamie's property. Younger brother Zach is a bit of a slob and would need quite a bit of work to become hero material. It would take a very special someone to get him there. Do you have any plans for a story for him?

Lynn K.: Zachary will definitely have his story at some point in the future . . . when I can find a heroine suitable for him!

PNR: You've written a number of novellas. We've discussed the time travel elements and the ghosts. Your first paranormal novella contained Time Travel however the device was a bit different. Tell us a bit about "The Gift of Christmas Past". I understand your novellas can now be found in a single collection?

Lynn K.: "The Gift of Christmas Past" was in a collection called THE CHRISTMAS CAT, so I had to bring a cat in somewhere.  Why not a feline matchmaker?  I like cats, personally, so putting one in the story was an easy thing.

Yes, my first four novellas can be found in LOVE CAME JUST IN TIME.

PNR: Your latest novella which first appeared in TO WEAVE A WEB OF MAGIC is unrelated to your de Piaget/MacLeod titles. It involves fairies? Will we be seeing related tales? More independent stories?

Lynn K.: TO WEAVE A WEB OF MAGIC was really a great gift from my publisher.  I'd always wanted to write fantasy and my editor made it happen for me.  There are the usual fantasy suspects (elves, dwarves, mages, magical items), but it definitely has a romantic slant.  I'm in the process of a fantasy trilogy now set in the same world.

PNR: You began writing your paranormals only a few years prior to the closing of Berkley Jove's Time Passages and Magical Love lines. Almost simultaneously vampire and futuristic romances began to line the shelves. Many paranormal romance writers chose to or were forced to explore other paths with their writing. To what do you attribute the continuing survival of your time travel/fantasies in these fickle times?

Lynn K.: Lines come and go. STARDUST OF YESTERDAY was the launch book for Berkley/Jove's Haunting Hearts line and A Dance Through Time was part of the three-book launch for Time Passages, so before those lines were created, there wasn't (at least at Berkley) much of a place for paranormals either.  Before I started writing for Berkley, vampire novels were a big deal, then they seemed to wane; now they're back.  Who can predict these things?  I think that tastes change, lines begin and end, and at the end of the day what sells is a good book.

Personally, I think my books have been successful because of the characters involved.  I never get emails saying ''wow, what a great plot - it kept me up all night!"  But I do get a constant stream of emails from people who've fallen in love with my characters and want to read more about them.  I really believe that all the success my books have had can be attributed to having written character-driven stories.

PNR: Speaking of closings, we've recently heard rumors that Silhouette will be shutting down its long running Silhouette Romance line. These are considered "sweet" romances. This falls on the heels of the closing of the two traditional regency lines leaving fewer stories that might be considered more suitable for the younger romance readers. The new trend in NYC seems to be focused on the more erotic romance lines. Obviously when a main character is a ghost for 90% of a story there isn't going to be a great deal of sex occurring. As a well established author with a strong following, how does this trend affect your plans for future stories?

Lynn K.: It does't affect my plans at all.  Again, trends come and go and at the end of the day, all you have is a body of work that you can look back over and be comfortable with.  I've always written PG romances and I'll always continue to do so.

PNR: For readers who are new to your work, do you have any suggestions on where to begin? Are your books best read in a particular order?

Lynn K.: I have a reading order posted on my website (www.lynnkurland.com).  I like reading by publication order, but chronologically by family is also good if you want to just get immersed in each family.

PNR: Could you tell us about your current projects, what can readers expect to see in the coming months?

Lynn K.: More romances, more fantasies, definitely more ghosts and time travels!

PNR: Thank you Lynn, for taking time out to speak with us; where can readers find out more about your work?

Lynn K.: Check out my website and come join the board.  It's a great place!

STARDUST OF YESTERDAY

de Piaget #1

Daydreaming of her wonderful castle, she imagined that it contained a handsome, brave knight --

Suddenly, her eyes flew open. She scrambled over her chair, looking with alarm at what was quivering in front of her, only an inch away from where her toes had dangled off the edge....

It was a sword. "I'll not miss my mark a second time." A deep voice grated from behind her. She whirled around. It was her knight. It was also her ghost.

Genevieve Buchanan inherited a castle -- and a ghost to go along with it. But Kendrick de Piaget was no typical ghost. He was a handsome and infuriatingly arrogant thirteenth-century knight. At first he wanted to frighten Genevieve, though she was more charmed than scared by his ghostly tricks. But when his thoughts turned to wooing instead, Genevieve had to face her greatest fear: falling in love.
