Kari Thomas

I am a native Floridian now living in Arizona. Along with being an author, I am a Freelance editor for Treble Heart Books, Newsletter Editor for my RWA chapter NARWA, and have two book reviews sites for my column “Kari’s Korner” at: www.authorkari.com and www.loveromancesandmore.com . I am caregiver for my dad, so I’m also a stay-at-home writer.

An Interview with Kari Thomas

PNR: Have you always wanted to be a writer? What inspired you to choose writing as a career?

Kari T.: My mother taught me to read before I started school and I’ve been a voracious reader ever since! So, it was only natural that the “writing bug” also hit at an early age. I tried several careers choices: went to University to get a degree in Child Psychology, and also in Library Science. I’ve been a CPA for over 20 years. But nothing was as challenging or kept me as deeply motivated as writing.

PNR: Do you have a strict writing schedule? How do you balance your personal and writing time?

Kari T.: I wish I could say that I have this perfect schedule. Ha! In my dreams! Lol! I’m definitely one of those “seat-of-the-pants” writers and that means I write when I get the time and never plan what I’m going to write until that moment! Definitely NOT a recommendation for writers!

PNR: Most authors are avid readers; what is your favorite genre to read? Favorite authors?

Kari T.: It will always be the Paranormal genre. I love to read all genres, and have a personal library of almost 1000 books in all genres, fiction and non fiction. I have so many favorite authors, but some off the top of my head are: Christine Feehan, JR Ward, Cheyenne McCray,  Lynn Veihl, Susan Squires, Angela Verdenius, Cierra James.

PNR: Being a newly published author, who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?

Kari T.: Who or what has been your biggest support? My family has always been behind me 100% when I told them I wanted to write. And I have so many wonderful author friends and mentors (authors Cierra James, Rita Rainville, Joan Pickart) who have been there for me every step of the way. My RWA chapter, NARWA (www.narwa.com) is very supportive, too, and it’s been a great journey sharing this experience with them.

PNR: Reviewers are raving about your debut work, TEMPTATION UNLEASHED, how does it feel to have such positive recognition with your first novel?

Kari T.: I’m soooooo happy!! It’s a great feeling knowing that others love my story as much as I do. Even if it had never been published, and just read by others, I would be so happy about all the positive responses.

PNR: Could you tell us about the publication of your first book, TEMPTATION UNLEASHED?

Kari T.: It was scary! Lol! I submitted it in Jan. 2006 and received an acceptance two weeks later. From there it was working with an editor in a rush to get it published by June 26, 2006. I was going crazy during the editing process. I’m an English Major and even though the editor (bless her heart!) kept telling me it was GREAT, I kept thinking: No, it needs work! Gotta change this, gotta change that!

PNR: Where did the idea for the story come from? How do you develop your story ideas?

Kari T.: I read anything and everything, including a lot of non fiction. One day I came across a wonderfully fascinating book on Wiccan Festivals and suddenly my heroine popped into my head! And that’s usually how all my ideas come. I find something of interest and immediately think: would this make a good story?

PNR: Your new release, TEMPTATION UNLEASHED, features a powerful witch; why do you feel the “Witch” is becoming such a popular character in the paranormal romance genre?

Kari T.: I think its because we’re seeing heroines that are stronger, with their own powers, and no longer need the hero to rescue them. Sometimes the heroine rescues the hero! Lol! Witches are fascinating characters, and you can give them unusual powers as well as vulnerabilities that allows the reader to “connect” with her.

PNR: As a writer, what do you like most about the paranormal romance genre? As a reader?

Kari T.: As a writer, it’s great being able to develop your own rules and world. Anything goes these days! That gives a writer a lot of freedom and the process/creation is a fun journey. As a reader, I love knowledge and reading of all things paranormal really opens the mind to more than “just meets the eye” in our world.

PNR: Do you feel your writing is character driven or plot driven?

Kari T.: Do you find it difficult the juggle the two elements? I’ve always felt it’s mostly character, but readers are telling me it’s a good combination of both. Hmmm....can’t figure out HOW I managed to do that! Lol!

PNR: I really enjoyed your heroine, Kira; you effectively portrayed her emotional turmoil over family obligations and her feelings for the hero, Aidan. Could you tell us a little about her development? And of course your sexy alpha were; who was your favorite character to write, and why?

Kari T.: THANKS! I really loved developing Kira. There was just a “bit” of me in her. But I am an animal lover, so it was hard putting her in the position of being terrified of animals. I think that strengthened her as I wrote. Too, I wanted her to be powerful in her own right, yet have that vulnerability that kept her human. As for Aidan! Well, that alpha male was a bit TOO alpha and I had to keep him under control the whole time I was writing! Lol! I think he was actually the hardest –yet- my favorite to write because he was such a challenge.

PNR: Your story blends a number of paranormal abilities and beings, was this challenging?

Kari T.: Not at all. Paranormal writers have so much freedom in developing their stories and I loved letting my imagination run wild!

PNR: Could you tell readers what your plans are for the Kira and Aidan? Will we be seeing these captivating characters in future stories?

Kari T.: Uh oh, I knew THAT question was coming! Lol! I hadn’t planned on writing more of them, but all my readers (and my editor!) keep asking for Aidan’s brother, Gavin’s, story. It seems I had better plan a story for that hero and soon!

PNR: Can you tell us about the projects are you currently working on, what can readers expect to see in the coming months?

Kari T.: I’ve just started a new paranormal romance that I’m hoping will expand into at least a three-book series. Of course, there will be shapeshifters and witches! I’ve got the ideas on paper, but keep changing the plot. Sigh......

PNR: Thank you, Kari, for taking time out to talk to us. Where can readers find out what’s new and how can they contact you?

Kari T.: Thank you, Dee, for this opportunity! I have an autor’s web site: www.authorkari.com, and my author email is authorkari@yahoo.com . I’d love to hear from everyone!
