Deidre Knight is a literary agent, mom, wife, novelist and southern woman, and proud to answer to all of these titles. Before she founded The Knight Agency in 1996, Deidre worked behind the camera in movies and television. During the ten years since she launched her literary agency, she has grown The Knight Agency to national prominence, shepherding authors on to every major bestseller list. With agency sales of more than 450 titles, a large percentage of which are in the categories of romance and women’s fiction, Deidre has established a reputation for discovering vivid and unique storytellers and is considered an industry expert on the hot trend of paranormal fiction. Writing in that genre, she creates fresh characters and strong, emotional storylines. One editor has described her as having “tremendous verve and a great knack for character and smart scenes.” Others have called her writing “outstanding” and “emotionally evocative.”
Deidre began her writing career at age nine, when her award-winning essay on Barbie was published in her hometown newspaper, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution. She has been writing in one form or another ever since. After nearly a decade of working with Knight Agency clients, helping them discover their creative potential, Deidre will celebrate her own fiction debut in April 2006. To be published by NAL, Parallel Attraction is the first in her innovative “the future meets the present” paranormal series. Her fiction launch marks the fulfillment of Deidre's lifelong writing dream, and she is excited to embark on yet another new and fulfilling creative journey.
PNR: How long have you been writing? What inspired you to begin writing?
Deidre K.: I began writing at age nine when I was fortunate enough to be in an elementary school enrichment program that really encouraged us to write. We would take a field trip to the art museum, then each of us would go sit alone and write a poem about the exhibit. It taught me at an early age to “translate” my observations and experiences into a written perspective. I think that was really the beginning for me, and from there it wasn’t a huge leap to begin “hearing” characters in my head, invented people who always seemed to be talking. And for those who know me—I am always talking myself. So it’s no surprise that my characters never want to be quiet. Anyway that was about thirty years ago, and with the exception of a few breaks, I’ve never really stopped writing.
PNR: Do you have a strict writing schedule? How do you balance your personal and writing time?
Deidre K.: I believe, theoretically, in a strict writing schedule, and I think discipline is a key factor when it comes to achieving your writing goals and dreams. That said, I also have to balance my writing with a busy family life and a successful agenting career, so I tend to write in bursts and spurts much more than I’d like. For instance, I wrote more than one hundred pages on PARALLEL SEDUCTION (my April release) over Labor Day weekend. I have the ability to get incredibly focused and absorbed and just let it rip. I also type about 100 wpm and I think that helps me more than I used to realize in terms of simply getting my ideas down on paper fairly quickly.
PNR: Most authors are avid readers; what is your favorite genre to read? Favorite authors?
Deidre K.: My reading tends to wander all over the map, much like my musical tastes (you can give me the Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Duke Ellington or Radiohead. I’m happy with a rainbow of sounds.) With reading, I grew up on the classics, authors like Flannery O’Connor, Jane Austen, Tolstoy, and so forth. As an adult I have definitely migrated more frequently toward commercial fiction, romance in particular. My dreamy beach reads when I’m just in the “reader seat” would be Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Lisa, Unger, Nelson DeMille, Pat Conroy, Alex Garland, Donna Tartt. I could go on and on!
PNR: Being a newly published author, who or what has been the biggest influence on your work? Who or what has been your biggest support?
Deidre K.: Without a doubt my family has been my biggest influence and also my biggest support. When I was a little girl my mother was the first person to call me a writer, and she bought me my first journal, telling me to write in it every day. Since being married my husband has always helped me grow and challenge myself, and I wouldn’t be published now without his critique and encouragement. I think it’s so important to have someone who truly gets what you’re doing creatively, but who can also push you past your self-perceived limits.
PNR: What are the greatest challenges to you as an author?
Deidre K.: Ah, it’s back to the life balancing act that we discussed above. My brain is never quiet and I’m always getting ideas, but it’s about finding the time to devote to the many ideas in my mind. Sometimes I become frustrated because I dream of a life where I have unlimited creative time, but the truth is I wouldn’t give up all the other wonderful aspects of my life—two beautiful children, a wonderful husband, a thriving agency career. So it’s about prioritizing and knowing that just because I might have a ton of writing ideas doesn’t mean I’m meant to pursue all of them.
PNR: You are president of the KNIGHT AGENCY, and represent authors; how has this experience helped you as a newly published author? And has being an author yourself added a new dimension or insight in dealing with the authors you represent?
Deidre K.: I’d like to say that it’s helped me, and I think that it has definitely made me more savvy about publicity and promotion. On the other hand, I think it’s hard knowing all that can go wrong in this business. I’d probably be a happier author if I didn’t know so much about how the system works. J On the whole, though, I’d say that I understand the importance of professionalism—never missing a deadline, working well with editors, and having reasonable expectations.
PNR: Your writing has been described as “compelling and absolutely phenomenal”, and reviewers and readers are raving about your debut novel, PARALLEL ATTRACTION; how does it feel to have such positive recognition with your first novel?
Deidre K.: Well, of course it’s very gratifying, but on the other hand it’s also a bit intimidating. There’s such a difference in writing for yourself—which I’ve done for thirty years—and knowing that reviewers and readers are waiting for the next books. You can’t help but feel you might let them down! I love the great reviews, but there’s one benchmark for me as a writer, and that’s to grow. To tell a better story with every next book.
PNR: Your hero and heroine, Jared and Kelsey, have struck an emotional cord with readers; could you give us some insight into the development of these characters and why you believe readers have made such a strong connection with them?
Deidre K.: At the heart of the story is a ROMEO AND JULIET archetype. As romance readers we all relate to a couple who love each other against inter-racial odds or any other giant block. In Jared and Kelsey’s case, well, they aren’t the same species—and yet they fell in love practically as children, only to have their memories of each other erased. So, in other words, they have huge obstacles to overcome, but there’s something very genuine and real about their youthful love. I wrote their first days together out of my own memories of a first high school love; that’s what I tried to channel, those feelings that are so innocent—yet very powerful. Many of us had that kind of relationship, something totally pure that doesn’t last very long. The only difference is that most of us never encounter that first love again many years later. I think readers probably imagine meeting up with that early love again, and see that in the Jared and Kelsey relationship—but with the added factor of their inter-species love.
PNR: Let’s talk about your new release, PARALLEL HEAT. This is the second book in the “Parallel” trilogy; could you give readers a sneak peek into what challenges Jared and Kelsey will face? What are your plans for the “Parallel” series?
Deidre K.: Right now, I have four books under contract, so it’s no longer a trilogy. J I have book four slated for next October, PARALLEL DESIRE. I’ve got developed plots for two more books, at least, so we’ll have to see where we go from here. After HEAT, a good bit of focus will go toward Scott Dillon—he’s the focus of PARALLEL SEDUCTION and also plays a major part in PARALLEL DESIRE. Scott’s relationship with FBI linguist Hope Harper opens a whole new direction to the series. Plus, Hope’s twin brother Chris Harper uncovers new secrets about the aliens that spin the series in a new direction. And let me tell you, Chris is not only a hottie in his own right, but has a serious story of his own that has to be told!
PNR: Your books are fast paced, action filled, and feature incredible characters; do you feel your writing is plot or character driven? Is it difficult to balance the two elements?
Deidre K.: Great question! I tend to address my books in terms of plot, but it’s absolutely impossible to remove character from that equation. I think the two elements, plot and character, are married twins that you can’t separate. Plot is an outworking of character, and character displays plot. The longer I write, the more convinced I become that these two elements are in a dynamic relationship, each to the other. But still, I’d say that when I think about a new story, I generally approach story first. Without character, though, that plot means nothing.
PNR: Paranormal romance is experiencing an incredible surge in popularity, what do you feel accounts for the sudden interest in the genre?
Deidre K.: I honestly believe that the paranormal genre exploded in a post-9/11 world. There’s that desire to believe our heroes are undefeatable. That we can conquer our enemies—supernatural or not. In our paranormal books good defeats evil, we are empowered and able to triumph over the worst of our enemies. We’re empowered and larger than life. That’s something we all needed after 9/11.
PNR: What is your opinion on the raise in popularity in erotic paranormal fiction? How would you describe the “heat” level in your books?
Deidre K.: I’d say the “heat” level in my books is on the highest end of the spectrum, and it’s easy to say why—paranormal allows for “beyond this world” sensuality. When the story is bound by the natural realm, well, there’s only so far the sensuality can go—but if you’re dealing with paranormal entities, there are no limits. Perhaps the hero has extraordinary aspects to his sexuality—as in my series where the royal lines undergo mating cycles that are quite particular (after all, several of my heroes have alternate “selves” that manifests as blazing balls of fire!) When you break down every natural barrier, you have something far more erotic than what we know in our every day world. This is the beauty of paranormal romance.
PNR: As a writer, what do you like most about the paranormal romance genre? As a reader? Is there a genre you would like to write but haven’t?
Deidre K.: The amazing thing about the paranormal romance genre is that it breaks all the barriers. The stakes are so much higher; gone are the “simple” rules of romance when the hero and/or heroine have supernatural abilities—everything becomes much more vivid. It’s one thing to realize that you’re boyfriend might be your father’s business enemy—yet quite another to know he’s immortal. It’s about higher stakes, sexier abilities, and confronting a higher definition of “true love.”
PNR: Can you tell us about the projects are you currently working on, what can readers expect to see in the coming months?
Deidre K.: My next book, PARALLEL SEDUCTION, comes out on April 4, 2007. It’s the next in the Parallel series, and for fans of Lieutenant Scott Dillon, you’ll be thrilled to know that it’s his book! Although I should warn you, the book features a very unusual love triangle. But it’s also very emotionally satisfying…. I can’t say more without providing spoilers, and I won’t do that! J Right now I’m working on book four in the Parallel Series, PARALLEL DESIRE which comes out next October. So basically fans of this series won’t have long to wait for next installments! I’m doing my best to make these upcoming books as sexy, erotic and thrilling as possible.
PNR: Thank you, Deidre, for taking time out to talk to us. Where can readers find out what’s new and how can they contact you?
Deidre K.: My website http://www.deidreknightbooks.com is the place to find it all! I have a discussion e-group, and the link to join is on my site. I also have a monthly newsletter with all kinds of great giveaways—again, the link to join is on my site. Thanks so much for this wonderful interview!
