A Romance for all TIMEs!

Dee Davis

Dee Davis completed her first romance in 1998 and promptly joined the RWA. A year after that, she finished her fourth manuscript and sold EIT to Berkley/Jove. Since then she has sold five romantic suspense novels to Ballantine/ Ivy and a second time travel to Dorchester.

Dee has a BA in Political Science and History, and a Masters Degree in Public Administration. During a ten-year career in public relations, she spent three years on the public speaking circuit, edited two newsletters, wrote three award winning public service announcements, did television and radio commercials, starred in the Seven Year Itch, taught college classes, lobbied both the Texas State Legislature and the US Congress, and served as the director of two associations.

EVERYTHING IN ITS TIME, Dee’s first novel, recently was honored as the Booksellers’ Best Paranormal Romance for 2000. In addition, EIT was a Holt Medallion finalist, a Texas Bronze winner for best historical, and a Dorothy Parker Award honorable mention for best debut novel. It was also a nominee for the RT Reviewers Choice Best Time Travel award.

Right now, the time Dee doesn’t spend at the computer is spent with her husband, daughter, cat, and puppy. They are all really good at listening to stories. (Well, not so much the puppy!)

An Interview with Dee Davis

PNR: What inspired you to become a romance writer?

Dee D.: I became a writer because I was turning forty and realized that if I didn’t do some of the things I’d always wanted to do, I might never do them. One of those things was to write a book. As far as romance… I cried when we didn’t get to see Cinderella’s wedding in Roger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. I always wanted Pete and Julie to get together on the Mod Squad. I was angry when they never let Judy and Major West fall in love on Lost in Space. I thought Nancy Drew needed a little less sleuthing and a little more kissing. I wanted Aragorn to have more romantic scenes with Arwen in The Lord of the Rings. I wanted Scarecrow to get together with Mrs. King a heck of a long time before they actually did, not to mention Remington Steele and Laura. I am still angry that Gus died in Lonesome Dove and left Lori alone. And I was delighted to discover that my brother’s GI Joe dolls had bendable arms -- the better to hug Barbie with. Can you see the trend here? I love romance!

PNR: What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

Dee D.: I read all over the board. Romance, Fantasy, Thrillers, Science Fiction, Literary Fiction, you get the picture. Among my favorites are suspense, time travel and medieval romance. (No surprises there!)

PNR: Your debut novel, the time travel romance EVERYTHING IN ITS TIME (released in the summer of 2000), was critically acclaimed. Since then you have also made a name for yourself in writing Romantic Suspense. What is the appeal of these two categories for you?

Dee D.: I have always loved Romantic Suspense. Mary Stewart is one of my favorite authors. And so writing suspense is not too big a leap for me. Everything I write, even my time travels, have an element of suspense in them. I’ve loved time travels ever since I read Madeline’s L’Engle's A WRINKLE IN TIME. (Another all time favorite book). I think Meg and Calvin’s story was my first romance. The idea of someone dealing with another time period is fascinating. Like Twain’s A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT. Add to that the premise of lovers separated through the boundary of time, and I’m hooked.

PNR: THE PROMISE marks your return to time travel romance. This time the setting is in the American West. One of the elements I liked about in your previous time travel was the travel device which were heirloom cairngorm earrings. Heirloom jewelry has struck again. This time it is a silver locket, which is gifted to the heroine Cara Reynolds on her sixteenth birthday. This day ends in tragedy for her, but also holds a promise of better days to come. Tell us what happens on that treacherous mountain road.

Dee D.: Cara receives an antique locket from her mother that has been passed down from her great-grandmother. But she is unable to cherish the memory as only moments later, her father’s car crashes, leaving Cara the only survivor.

PNR: Cara is saved from freezing to death by a rancher, nineteen year old Michael McPherson. What is Michael doing on the scene?

Dee D.: Michael, a homesteader, is riding line, looking for cattle stranded and freezing in the snowstorm. What he finds is Cara.

PNR: Is there an instant affinity between the two?

Dee D.: There is an affinity that neither of them can really explain, brought about in part by the situation they find themselves in, and also by a spiritual connection that transcends time.

PNR: At this point the reader is aware that one of them in fact has passed to another time, though the pair have no idea that this is the case. The morning brings a different reality, and the two are separated by time for nine long years. How do the each of them deal with the other's disappearance?

Dee D.: Michael has spent years looking for Cara to no avail. And although his family has given up, he holds steady in his belief she is out there somewhere. Cara on the other hand has been convinced by her doctors and grandfather that Michael was a figment of her imagination, created to help her survive the worst night of her life. Despite that fact, she has trouble letting go, and finds herself nine years later, again on the side of that mountain.

PNR: What brings them back together?

Dee D.: Michael is shot, and seeks refuge in the mine shaft where he stayed with Cara. He knows that he must have help or will die, but he doesn’t have the strength to go and get it. Cara feels the call of her memories, but instead of releasing her past, she discovers a wounded Michael.

PNR: I mentioned the silver locket. Silver is an important element in this story. It is a cause for murder (yes romantic suspense just crept in there <g>). Michael's father had had a lucky strike in the mine he'd named The Promise. What did this name mean to him?

Dee D.: The Promise was named because of the promise Duncan made his wife. He promised to take the riches from the mine and at last settle down with his family, providing Rose with the home life and stability she craved.

PNR: What should have been a happy circumstance quickly turns tragic -- Why?

Dee D.: Rose destroys his dreams by running away with his partner and taking the silver with them.

PNR: The silver is still missing in Cara's time. How does this affect the pair?

Dee D.: They are faced with the consequences of Michael’s past in Cara’s present, and must deal with it there, before returning to the past to find answers and save Michael’s family.

PNR: We'll stop there and let the readers enjoy the story for themselves. Tell us about your latest romantic suspense title for Ivy, MIDNIGHT RAIN.

Dee D.: For undercover FBI agent Katie Cavanaugh this was supposed to be a routine job-go in, get the evidence, catch a killer. But from the moment she lays eyes on John Brighton the intense charge in the air between them lets her know that the stakes will be higher this time around. Posing as his physical therapist allows Katie first-hand access to him but she can't let the intimacy of living together cloud her judgment. She will need her instincts sharp if she is going to find him guilty...or prove his innocence.

Left for dead along a deserted highway, John awakes to find himself physically weakened, mentally scarred, and the lead suspect in a murder investigation. The only bright point in his life is Katie, warm and beautiful, she is the one person he thinks he can trust. But as a net of suspicion closes in, and as loyalties divide, John and Katie must work together to unravel the maze of secrets and lies that threaten to keep them apart forever...

PNR: What is next for Dee Davis?

Dee D.: My newest romantic suspense DANCING IN THE DARK will be on shelves next September. Here’s a blurb:

When Sara Martin’s husband and son are killed in an accident, she wishes only that she had died too. At first unable to cope with life without them, she slowly begins to realize that she must find a way to go on. Two years later, when a crank caller begins to haunt her nights, she reluctantly goes to the police. What she finds there is a second chance at love.

Police Detective Eric D’ Angelo is investigating a series of brutal murders when asked to fill in for his partner interviewing a woman about a crank caller. Despite the fact that there is nothing he can do to help her, he finds himself drawn to the fragile widow. As their relationship develops, the violence accelerates until no one is safe, and Sara and Eric are left -- dancing in the dark.

Of course I’d love to write another time travel. There’s still much to be told about the Mackintoshes of Duncreag and the Macphersons of Cluny.

THE PROMISE - The mine called out to Cara from deep in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, near the town of Silverthread. It was rich in ore, overflowing with wealth that could make a family's fortune -- or destroy it. In it had begun the weaving of a web of deceit, a murderous tapestry of lies that had meant the deaths of many innocents. But also in its shadowy maw lay the path to redemption and love. Its labyrinthine tunnels held a magic that could draw a woman one hundred years in to the past, into the arms of the one who could make her whole. To right the wrongs already done, to paint a new future, one brighter and full of love, Cara would have to unravel its mysteries. She would have to depend upon the rugged man who emerged, trust his vow that he would keep her safe and cherish her forever. Then, and only then, would she truly understand the danger -- and the power -- of . . . THE PROMISE.
