Spotlight on Futuristic/Science Fiction Romance

Publisher Spotlight: Aphrodite's Apples

Welcome to your new destination for romantic fiction, Aphrodite's Apples! We believe that a good romance should have a driving plot, and a thriving love story. Make it hot, but give it plot! This is not your mother's romance novel; so if you're ready, take a bite.

We are talking with H.S. Kinn, co-founder of the new ePublisher, Aphrodite's Apples.

PNR: Aphrodite's Apples is creating a buzz amongst readers and authors, could you tell us about your vision for the company?

H.S. Kinn: Aphrodite's Apples would like to bridge the gap between romance and erotica.  We hear from many readers that want a good, hot read, but also lament that many titles lack the warmth and emotion you get from a traditional romance.  They are "hot, but bothered," as a recent Romantic Times feature on the industry said.  Our stories provide both elements, because it's what we want to read ourselves, and what we feel readers are looking for in a good book.

PNR: Angela Skaggs and yourself are the co-founders of Aphrodite’s Apples and are both authors; could you tell us why you decided to establish your own ePublishing company?

H.S. Kinn: Angela and I have known each other a long time; we even ran an online writer's critique circle.  Many of the authors we initially signed for Aphrodite's came from that group, and it came about largely because we decided if we banded together we could bring more attention to our works.  I feel we've assembled a formidable team of writers and editors - I am proud of each and every one of them.  They are a phenomenal, talented group of women!

PNR: What do you feel Aphrodite’s Apples has to offer authors and readers that is not currently available from existing ePublishers?

H.S. Kinn: That's tied in with our mission statement—we want to offer titles that unite the emotion you'll find in a traditional romance combined with more daring elements, in terms of plot lines and sexual exploration.

PNR: Aphrodite’s Apples has an impressive line up of authors to kick off your opening; which talented authors can we expect to see publishing at Aphrodite’s Apples in the future?

H.S. Kinn: We've recently signed the fabulous CJ England, Emma Wildes (more for historical fans than paranormal, but I adore her work!), Sabrina Luna, and some new faces who have great promise!

PNR: Until recently erotic romance was offered primarily through electronic publishers; how do you feel the decision of the big print publishing companies to offer erotic lines will affect the ePublishing business?

H.S. Kinn: This is a matter of following your audience.  Women today are more frank about their sexuality, and they want books that reflect their lives and fantasies.  As far as how this affects ePublishing - not much.  You're still going to find edgier titles online.  Mainstream houses play it safer - they have to.

PNR: What can ePublishing offer an author that print cannot?

H.S. Kinn: I can't speak for all ePublishing houses, but at Aphrodite's you will get more personal contact with management, and less waiting for a reply on your submission.  You'll get more commitment to your title—I don't take any books that I wouldn't personally read.

PNR: Aphrodite's Apples will be offering a range of romance genres at varying sensuality levels; can you give us an overview of your rating system?

H.S. Kinn: We talked about this at length before we launched, and we decided that we would simply list what sort of content you can expect on the books' individual pages.  Straight romance is labeled as such, and straight erotica will likewise be labeled.  For example, Kayleigh Jamison's Svetkavista mentions that it has scenes involving a male/female/female love triangle--female/female pairing, a threesome (male/female/female) and hot steamy sex in graphic language.  We want our readers to know what they are getting into!

PNR: Aphrodite's Apples will be offering several different lines including Bites, Signature, and Poison Apples. Can you tell readers what we can expect to see from these lines?

H.S. Kinn: Bites are our short story anthologies, and some are paranormal, some historical, etc.  Our Signature line is for general novels, and Poison Apples are for darker fiction.  Masquerade, Volume One is a good example of what you can expect from our Bites—it features a mysterious island plantation house where the gods will grant your fondest wish!  Katrina Strauss' work is prominently featured among our Poison Apple - her take on romance is darker, though still happily ever after.

PNR: The paranormal romance genre is very popular at the moment, and Aphrodite’s Apples seems to be a 'paranormal friendly' publisher. What do you feel accounts for the sudden interest in all things paranormal?

H.S. Kinn: Paranormal romance allows for a greater range of fantasy—you can bend the rules of the real world, while still retaining a degree of familiarity.  Speaking as someone who's written straight fantasy and paranormal, I don't think it's less work than building a whole world from the ground up, because you have to blend the fantastic and the banal in a believable way, but when it's done right, it's a great ride.

PNR: What can readers expect to see in the coming months?  What paranormal romance offerings can we look forward to?

H.S. Kinn: Masquerade, Volume Two; Pantheon: Karma, The Summoner, by Alisha Steele; The Eldritch Legacy, Book Two: Lessons Learned by Katrina Strauss; The Eldritch Legacy, Book Three: Fates Fulfilled by Katrina Strauss, Strange Days by HS Kinn.

PNR: Do you have plans to offer your titles in print format in the future?

H.S. Kinn: Absolutely!  Unified Souls, Secrets Revealed and Immortal Reveries will be out in print later this year.

PNR: Thank you, Ms. Kinn, for taking time out to talk with us about Aphrodite's Apples, where can readers find out more about your upcoming releases?
